Vietnam Veteran Memorial Dedication Ceremony in Clark County, WA on Saturday, October 15 at 11 a.m.
Mặc cho mưa gió và dự báo về giông bảo xảy ra, hơn cả trăm người đã đến tham dự lể khánh thành Đài Tưởng Niệm Các Chiến Binh Hoa kỳ đã bỏ mình trong chiến tranh Việt Nam, được tổ chức vào lúc 11 giờ trưa thứ Bảy 15/10, bên trong hội trường cơ quan Cựu Chiến Binh thành phố Vancouver tọa lạc ở số 1601 East 4th Plain Blvd. Vancouver, WA 98661.
Trong hàng ngũ quan khách tham dự nhìn thấy có sự hiện diện của đông đảo các cựu quân nhân VNCH và đại diện CĐNV tại 2 thành phố Portland là Chủ Tịch Từ Đức Tháo và Vancouver với Chủ tịch Phạm Hùng Minh.
Đây là dịp họp để các đại diện các gia đình quân nhân và những cựu chiến bình Hoa kỳ đã từng tham chiến tại Việt Nam họp mặt chia xẻ những cảm xúc liên quan đến cuộc chiến cách đây hơn 4 thập niên, tại quốc gia đồng minh bên kia bờ Thái Bình Dương.
Diễn giả chính của chương trình buổi lễ là bà Jerilyn Brusseau cùng người mẹ là Rae Cheney. Cả hai phụ nữ này tạo cảm giác bùi ngùi xúc động cho hàng trăm người có mặt, khi nhắc lại nỗi đau thương của gia đình sau khi nhận được hung tin về cái chết của nguời thân là thiếu úy Dan Cheney, đã hy sinh vào ngày 6/1/1969 tại mặt trận Hậu Nghĩa trong lúc cố cứu mạng sống cho một phi công trực thăng.
Chủ tịch Phạm Hùng Minh và một cựu quân nhân VNCH, đã thay mặt CĐNV quận hạt Clark lên dâng vòng hoa tưởng niệm trong buổi lễ.
Đài tưởng niệm được xây dựng bên trong khuôn viên của Vancouver Veterans’ Affairs, bao gồm một cột cao đặt chiếc phi cơ trực thăng Huey và phía dưới là bức tường đá ghi tên 58 quân nhân Hoa kỳ, cư dân của quận hạt Clark County, đã hy sinh trong cuộc chiến bảo vệ miền nam Việt Nam.
Các cựu quan nhân Việt – Mỹ có mặt tham dự lễ tưởng niệm, đã được vinh danh và trao tặng món quà nhỏ là phù hiệu gắn trên ngực kỷ niệm 50 năm Hoa kỳ tham chiến tại Việt Nam.
VANCOUVER, Wash.—September 26, 2016— The Community Military Appreciation Committee (CMAC), and VA Portland Health Care System invite the community to the unveiling and dedication of the Vietnam Memorial Monument at the Vancouver VA campus on Saturday, October 15 at 11 a.m.
This new memorial will honor 59 Clark County military service members who were killed in Vietnam. Brass plaques with these war heroes’ names have been mounted on stone monuments under the Huey helicopter. All Vietnam-era veterans will be recognized and honored at the event with a 50th Anniversary commemorative pin.
“Thanks to all the volunteers in our community who have made this memorial a reality. A character of a community is judged by how it remembers those who sacrifice for their country,” said CMAC co-chair, Larry J. Smith, Army colonel and Vietnam combat veteran.
A reception with light refreshments will start at 10:00 in the Vancouver VA campus gymnasium, adjacent to the Memorial Garden. Follow the signs to the event once you enter the campus at 1601 E. 4th Plain Boulevard, Vancouver, WA 98663.
Featured speakers event will be Jerilyn Brusseau and Rae Cheney, the sister and mother of U.S. Army 1st Lt. Daniel Cheney, one of the Clark County military service members who was killed in Vietnam and listed on the new memorial. The Brusseaus cofounded PeaceTrees VietNam. They travel frequently to Vietnam to assist those whose lives and livelihoods are threatened by the explosive remnants of war. PeaceTrees sponsors demining and mine risk education, victim assistance, and community building projects, such as kindergartens and libraries, in partnership with the people of Quang Tri Province.
All CMAC events are privately funded. CMAC is an all-inclusive group composed of members representing youth, education, civic, military, veterans groups, and local governments. CMAC executes and plans community-wide events, such as the Memorial Day, Veterans Day, High School Salute, and POW/MIA Day ceremonies and recognition/support of military families of all services.
